Pitcher Plant

There are many varieties of pitcher plants including those growing wild in the swamps of east Texas. This one (nepenthes alata) originates in southeast Asia. It is an under story jungle plant. It is an easy care plant. Keep outdoors in spring, summer and fall in shade under a patio roof or shade tree. Keep  wet. Sprinkle with a garden hose and let some of the water drain down into the pitchers. Small insects are attracted to go into the pitchers, get trapped, die and the plant digests them. Bring inside and keep moist with hand mister during cold weather. It is a semi vine that grows from the top putting on new leaves. New pitchers are formed on stems that grow from leaf tips. We have them periodically at the nursery and at shows. Call for availability
